Gin and cheese pairing
If you love cheese half as much as we do then we know that you’ll love pairing tasty cheese with wine, beer and even gin! That’s right, here at Surrey Wine School we don’t just talk about wine, we love celebrating all the tasty drinks especially if we get to pair them with cheese…
In this tasting we focus on pairing cheeses with Gin. Your host is Samantha Alder, nominated for wine educator of the year in 2019, Sam has a secret passion for Gin! Sam will teach you how to taste the cheeses as well as the Gins and then show you how to bring the two skills together to create amazing pairings. Sam will also touch on the production techniques for both to help you understand why they taste the way they do.
Sam has selected 4 different delicious cheeses to taste with 2 superb Gins.
The Gins –
- Martin Millers London Dry - a textbook example of the London Dry style, all citrus peel and zingy fragrant coriander seed, fresh as a daisy with a cool cucumber laced finish.
- Plymouth Gin - a heritage gin of epic standing! Plymouth still makes the best G&T around but tonight we’ll learn about its startlingly gastronomic side, rich and buttery with a creamy soft texture.
Both of these gins are easily available in larger branches of most of the main supermarkets, both typically cost between £25 and £28 per bottle but frequently reduced on special offer by around £5.
- Soft Goat’s Cheese- e.g Five Mile Town ideally you want a soft goat’s cheese which is light with a mousse-like texture, fresh with a lactic tang and plenty of lemony flavour will make this the perfect citrus companion to gin!
- Pungent Washed-Rind Cheese- e.g. Stinking Bishop, Munster or Epoisses;these cheeses are amongst the most complex soft cheeses around with earthy mushroom notes on the bloomy rind married to creamy unctuous centres.
- Feta- e.g. Yorkshire Fettle this brined aged cheese delivers the piquancy of the sheep’s milk in a crumbly and light texture, considered by experts to be one of the oldest cheeses in the world.
- Triple Creamed Cheese- e.g. Delice de Bourgogne, No1 Bix (Waitrose), St Felicien (Tesco) these decadent cheeses are made with the addition of cream for a rich, smooth texture.

The cost is £15 is per household, not per person. The price does not include the cost of the cheeses and Gin.
